Heritage tourism is one of the nation's leading industries with travelers increasingly seeking experiences that provide insight into American history and culture. The Manhattan Project sites have tremendous potential for capitalizing on the growing heritage tourism industry and the popular interest in World War II. Each of the three principle Manhattan Project sites offers the experience of visiting a "secret city," learning about the path-breaking scientific and engineering developments that took place there, and seeing first-hand some examples of the production plants, laboratories, equipment, or other aspects of the history. Other sites that contributed to the Manhattan Project are scattered across the country in 13 different states. The Atomic Heritage Foundation is interested in working with these sites and other interested organizations to develop a national heritage tourism plan that will help ensure that the unique and important resources of these sites will be preserved to tell the story of the Manhattan Project for the public and future generations.

Settled by Spaniards; built by French and German immigrants; promoted by American entrepreneurs; forgotten by all. A world drama of international events has been played out in part on Rio Grande City’s stage. Through the years riots and wars and raids have revived national interest in this small town ... on this quite river ... on the edge of the world.
Los Caminos del Rio Heritage Corridor
Rio Grande City is located in the heart of Los Caminos del Rio Heritage Corridor which stretches 200 miles on both sides of the Rio Grande River from Brownsville/Matamoros to Laredo/Nuevo Laredo. The corridor contains the most significant architectural and historical treasures of the 18th and 19th centuries – treasures that have contributed to the development of Texas and the Southwestern United States.
With more than 600 historic designations, Rio Grande City boasts the highest concentration of historic buildings and sites than any other location in the Caminos del Rio. The buildings are a physical reminder of the tragedies and triumphs that have visited this town since it was settled in 1753.
America's Most Endangered Historic Places
Rio Grande City and Los Caminos del Rio have recently been designated as one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. This designation by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the History Channel will bring needed national exposure to a community interested in restoring its properties and reclaiming its past.

New Zealand travel in the King Country region is the gateway to eco/cultural, heritage tourism activities, attractions and Maori culture in the heart of New Zealand. We also provide a comprehensive accommodation and business directory for all the main towns, villages and districts of King Country.
King Country is a land where stories, myths and legends abound, it's matched only by landscapes you've never seen before. It's a land of contrasts with each scene a beauty of its own. From the magical, underground caverns of the Waitomo Caves, to the historical harbours of Kawhia and Aotea, we invite you off the beaten track to experience Aotearoa like you've never done before.
The King Country is named after the movement of the Maori warrior Chief "King Tawhiao", who with his determined followers, led a resistance of European's coveting their land. After failing to stop the invasion, King Tawhiao and his followers sought refuge in the remoter parts of this region and for a time thereafter, the Pakeha (Europeans) ventured into the King Country and parts of the Waikato region at their own risk.
Although the King Country now has several substantial towns, beyond them a sense of isolation persists in what is some of the North Island's wildest, stunningly beautiful, and most unspoilt terrain
