| Description: |
Forest Heath covers an area of 144 square miles. It has a mixture of land types, which has given rise to its character and dominant forms of employment. To the south-west is the chalk downland, an ideal landscape for the home of horseracing and the bloodstock industry, centred on Newmarket. The fens and clay downland provide a location for agricultural activities. The brecks are covered by Thetford Forest, Britain’s largest lowland forest, and act as a centre for forestry and recreational uses.
Economic activity and development within Forest Heath is centred on the three main towns of Newmarket, Mildenhall and Brandon. In addition the two major United States Air Force bases at Mildenhall and Lakenheath are important generators of business for a wide range of local companies. There has been the emergence of high technology industries running alongside light engineering and service industries. Major employees within the district include: Animal Health Trust, Elco (Europe) Ltd, BLP Components, JEB Engineering Design Ltd, English Architectural Glazing, Silverline, Arrowpak Ltd and Omar Mobile Homes.
