In February 1986, an 18-member Governor's Task Force on Tourism was appointed to "assess the strengths and weaknesses of the hospitality industry in the state and return recommendations for improving this vital, but often over looked industry." The task force began their work in March 1986 and issued their "Tourism Development Report" in May 1986. The major objective of the report was the establishment of a statewide public/private sector promotional organization…THE MISSISSIPPI TRAVEL PROMOTION ASSOCIATION (MTPA). On May 12, 1986, MTPA began operations with the primary objective of creating an industry-wide promotional force with a focus centering on private sector marketing to the traveling public. That mission, although somewhat broadened in recent years, remains basically the same.

Mississippi is the birthplace of America's music. Blues, country, rock 'n roll - they all started right here. From blues legends Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and B.B. King to the king of rock 'n roll, Elvis Presley, to the father of country music, Jimmie Rodgers - the only place you'll find the history, heritage, legends and folklore that surrounds the sounds of America's music is Mississippi.

A great location, excellent schools, quality health care, affordable housing and terrific people have combined to make Grenada a regional "hub" for employment, commerce, and recreation. Grenada is located in North central Mississippi where the Delta and Hill Country meet, almost equal distance between Memphis and Jackson. Unlike many of the communities located on the edge of the Delta, Grenada's economy is primarily based in manufacturing rather than agriculture. This means ample opportunity for the County's 23,000 residents.

how the fate of a nation was shaped by the dramatic events that unfolded in Corinth during 1862. Corinth, at the junction of the Memphis & Charleston and the Mobile & Ohio railroads, was recognized for its strategic importance by Confederate and Union Commanders. Due to its significance, as many as 300,000 soldiers from the North and the South occupied Corinth from 1861-1865. On April 6-7, 1862, the Confederate army made a preemptive strike north of Corinth to protect the city against Union troops being amassed along the Tennessee River. The result of the Confederate strike was the Battle of Shiloh where 44,000 Confederate troops and 65,000 Union troops met on an isolated field of battle. After their defeat at Shiloh, the Confederates withdrew to Corinth and evacuated the city on May 29, 1862. Later, on October 3-5, 1862, the Confederate forces attempted to retake the city of Corinth. The Battle of Corinth was the bloodiest in Mississippi and opened the way for Grant’s campaign against Vicksburg.
