Backpacker Tourism is a term used to denote a form of low-cost independent international travel, differentiating it from other forms of tourism notably by the following typical attributes: minimal budget use, longer duration traveling, use of public transport and multiple destinations/countries. Surrealism and Paula Rego at the Casa das Mudas
The Casa das Mudas Centre of Arts, in Calheta, on the West Coast, shows a core of works including paintings, drawings, sculptures and other objects by several artists from the Portuguese surrealist movement.
In this beautiful artistic space, one can also see an exhibition of lithographs by the well-known Portuguese painter, Paula Rego, and also a display of photographs by the Japanese artist, Kimiko Yoshida.(more)

The two major cultural events held in Reykjavik each year are Reykjavik Culture Night and Reykjavik Arts Festival.
Reykjavik Culture Night, held in August, is Iceland's largest cultural event, with one third of the whole population taking part. Culture Night offers a lively programme of hundreds of different events including music, art, dance, theatre, sport, food, fashion and much more. Museums, shops and other venues in the city centre stay open throughout the evening and the event ends with a spectacular fireworks show from Reykjavik harbour.
Reykjavik Arts Festival, held in May/June, features a packed programme of Icelandic and international culture in all fields of art. The festival programme offers a variety of selected concerts, theatre, exhibitions, dance and opera performances. Along with its focus on Icelandic culture past and present, the Festival has hosted many outstanding international artists and performers.
In addition, about 20 other annual and biennial festivals and special events make the events calendar a real treat for the cultural buff.
