The seed for the Apple Route was planted in a meeting held in Brighton Council Chambers in April 1993. At this meeting representatives of five municipalities and the Presqu'ile and District Tourism Association decided it was time to work together in an effort to promote the apple history of the area.
Thanks to the relentless efforts of the volunteers who belonged to the Tourism Association and the Trenton Chamber of Commerce and with the help of the province through Jobs Ontario funding, this project was ready to launch May 24, 1994.
At the time of the launch, seven municipalities, were working together. The 64km route had been signed and the first brochure, showing attractions and businesses along the route, were available to the public.
In 2001, the route was expanded to include the towns of Cobourg and Port Hope. Their inclusion brings depth and variety to the Route and we welcome their participation.

Haldimand County is where the waters of the Southern Grand River meet Lake Erie – offering visitors the experience of both “Grand River Country” and “Ontario’s South Coast.”
For nearly 300 years, the Grand River has been used for commerce, power and recreation. Enjoy its charm and unique local flora and fauna that stem from being part of the only Carolinian Forest pocket left in Canada. The Grand’s varied resources, its historic echoes, cultural value and uniqueness as a river system are recognized nationally and internationally with its designation as a Canadian Heritage River. Be sure to enjoy the picturesque “Grand River Scenic Parkway” Tour Route as you make your way south along the Grand River. If that wasn’t enough, Lake Erie’s beautiful shoreline offers countless opportunities such as boating, windsurfing, water skiing, scuba diving, swimming - or just relaxing and soaking up the sun on one of our many beaches!
Our unique, historical and picturesque communities offer visitors small town charm and friendliness. Agriculture is a very important aspect of Haldimand County where visitors can enjoy beautiful country vistas or buy farm fresh produce at one of our many farm and roadside markets. If festivals, fairs and events are your style, the County has something for all ages and interests!

As the country’s capital city, Ottawa is best known as being home to the seat of federal government. But behind that façade lies an architecturally stunning city with a unique combination of urban and rural experiences. From cultural performances at the National Arts Centre to street performers in the Market, the ambiance in Ottawa is ever changing. Festivals, sporting events and exhibits at over 29 local museums present visitors and residents alike with a wonderful menu of things to see and do. The changing seasons offer highlights as well – spring, with over 3 million tulips in bloom, summer, with an action-packed festival and event schedule; fall, with the beautiful changing colours, and in winter, the world’s largest skating rink.
Looking at Ottawa’s history, its very origins lie in meeting and trading. This holds true today as Ottawa has become one of Canada’s top destinations to hold a meeting, convention or incentive gathering. Not only is Ottawa a major national centre for high technology, biotechnology and medical research, it is also home to over 1,000 associations. Other essential ingredients for success include Ottawa’s location in one of the most beautiful settings in the country with easy accessibility, a variety of meeting facilities, excellent tourism infrastructure, and proximity to the federal government.
